Slow Down and Look Up: What Madrid Taught Me from the Rooftops
I’ll be honest… when I first arrived in Madrid, I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to feel about it.
I’m not much of a city girl anymore. After living in Chicago for a couple of years, I think I got my fill of the city pace — the noise, the movement, the constant energy. These days, I crave open spaces, quiet mornings outside, birdsong, and a slow cup of coffee.
But Madrid had something to teach me.
And it started from above.
Fair warning: if I had to describe my time in Madrid, I’d say it was a beautiful mix of tapas, vino, and rooftops.
And this post is all about the rooftops.
There was something about seeing Madrid from above that softened me. Golden light stretched across the buildings. Conversations floated around me in a language I don’t fully understand, yet somehow still felt connected to. Glasses clinked. People lingered. The city moved, but not in a way that felt rushed.
And for a moment, I didn’t feel like I was just visiting Madrid.
I felt like I was part of it.
The Wine I Didn’t Expect
Now here’s the part that surprised me.
I don’t usually drink wine. I gave it up a number of years ago because, back home, it almost always came with a price — a headache, a foggy feeling, and a next-day reminder that it probably wasn’t worth it.
So I learned to avoid it.
But here in Spain, I was told something different.
“Try the wine,” they said. “It’s not the same.”
So I did.
Just one glass with dinner.
And the next morning… nothing.
No headache. No heaviness. No regret.
I honestly didn’t believe it.
So, naturally, I tried it again.
And again… nothing.
Hmmm. There might be something to this.
Slowing Down, the Spanish Way
What I began to notice is that it wasn’t just the wine.
It was the pace.
Meals weren’t rushed. Conversations weren’t interrupted. Even the way people gathered felt intentional, present, and connected.
You don’t just eat.
You experience.
You don’t just sit.
You stay.
And maybe that was the real lesson Madrid gave me.
Not everything needs to be fast.
Not everything needs to be optimized.
Not every moment needs to be filled, scheduled, or checked off a list.
Some things are meant to be savored.
My Nervous System Finally Caught Up
By the end of day one, I could feel it.
That subtle shift.
The one where your shoulders drop just a little, your breath deepens, and your mind finally stops racing ahead.
By day two, I wasn’t trying to “do Madrid.”
I was simply in it.
And by day three, I understood something I didn’t expect to learn here:
Even a city can feel calm when you choose how you experience it.
Taking a Little Piece of Madrid With Me
I’m taking a little piece of Madrid with me.
Not the busy streets.
Not the long lines.
Not the crowded plazas.
But the rooftops.
The golden light.
The slower meals.
The conversations that lingered.
The reminder to pause before rushing into the next thing.
And maybe… just maybe…
I’ll keep saying yes to a glass of Spanish wine.
Note to self:
Slow down and look up.
