Pena Palace: A Fairytale Above the Clouds

June 03, 20262 min read

There are places in the world that make you stop mid-step and simply say…

“Wow.”

For me, Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal was one of those places.

The journey there alone feels like stepping into another century. Our van wound carefully through the narrow streets of Sintra, climbing higher and higher along steep hillsides lined with colorful homes, stone walls, and lush green forests. Sintra itself feels like something out of a storybook — quaint, charming, romantic, and layered with history around every corner.

And then suddenly…

There it was.

Perched high above the clouds, Pena Palace almost doesn’t look real.

Its bright yellows and reds stand boldly against the green hills surrounding it. Built in the 1800s by King Ferdinand II, the palace is considered one of the greatest examples of Romanticism architecture in Europe — blending Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance, and Manueline influences into one breathtaking masterpiece.

Every room, every archway, every carved detail seemed to tell a story.

But what stunned me most were the views.

Standing along the narrow terrace walkways high above Sintra, I looked out across rolling hills, forests, tiny villages, and distant glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean. It felt as though the palace had been placed there intentionally to remind us how small we are… and how beautiful the world can be when we pause long enough to really see it.

And then there was our guide.

What an unexpected gift he turned out to be.

A retired Portuguese military general, he carried an incredible depth of knowledge about his country’s history, architecture, culture, and politics. But beyond what he knew… it was how much he loved Portugal that made the experience unforgettable.

You could hear the pride in every story he shared.

Sometimes when you travel, the destination becomes memorable because of the people you meet there.

This was one of those days.

Our tour was small — just two Americans and two Canadians — and by the end of the day, we felt less like strangers and more like old friends who had shared something special together.

We laughed.

We learned.

We stood in awe together.

Before leaving, we gathered for a group photo, hugs all around… even our tour guide joined in.

And honestly, that may be my favorite part of travel.

Not just seeing beautiful places.

But watching complete strangers become connected through shared wonder.

Pena Palace reminded me that the world is still full of places capable of surprising us.

Places that stretch our perspective.

Places that awaken curiosity.

Places that make us feel alive again.

And perhaps most importantly…

Travel reminds us that even in a world that often feels divided, people from different countries, backgrounds, and experiences can still laugh together, learn together, and hug goodbye at the end of a beautiful day.
