Óbidos, Portugal: Where Stories Still Live

June 11, 20262 min read

Built from stone.and stories.

Obidos is an hour north of Lisbon, this enchanting medieval town is one of the best-preserved walled villages in Europe. Encircled by ancient castle walls, lined with whitewashed homes draped in colorful bougainvillea, and connected by winding cobblestone streets, Óbidos feels as though it has stepped directly out of a fairytale.

At the highest point of the village stands the magnificent Castelo de Óbidos, whose origins stretch back through Roman and Moorish occupation before becoming a royal stronghold. Walking the castle ramparts offers sweeping views across the countryside and provides a glimpse into centuries of Portuguese history..

But what surprised me here was all the books.

In 2015, UNESCO designated Óbidos a City of Literature, and the town has embraced that identity in the most delightful ways. Bookstores seem to appear around every corner. One of the most famous is housed inside a 13th-century church where shelves of books now stand where pews once sat.

I could easily spend an entire day in a bookstore.

Add coffee and chocolate, and you’ll have to politely escort me out at closing time.

There is something magical about wandering through a town that values stories as much as history. The books invite you to slow down, linger, and imagine the lives of those who walked these same streets hundreds of years ago.

Óbidos is also known as the “Town of the Queens” or Vila das Rainhas. Beginning in 1210, Portuguese kings traditionally gifted the town to their queens as a wedding present. For more than five centuries, generations of queens cared for and invested in Óbidos, leaving behind churches, artwork, and architectural beauty that still enrich the town today.

Of course, no visit would be complete without tasting the town’s famous ginja, sweet cherry liqueur traditionally served in a small edible chocolate cup. Sip the liqueur, eat the cup, and enjoy one of Portugal’s most beloved traditions. You can even bring a travel pack back to your hotel for a nightly night cap. I know because I did.

A Bit of Insight

As I wandered through Óbidos, I couldn’t help but think about the power of stories.

Every community has them.

Every family has them.

Every person has them.

Some stories are written in books. Others are written in stone walls, old churches, family traditions, and memories passed from one generation to the next.

What I love about places like Óbidos is that they remind us the importance of preserving history and carrying forward the lessons, wisdom, creativity, and courage that shaped the present.

The world often encourages us to rush toward what’s next.

Óbidos invites us to pause.

To read.

To reflect.

To remember.

And perhaps to write a better “next chapter” because we took the time to learn from the ones that came before us.

Sometimes the most meaningful journeys are about seeing unexplored places and discovering a new perspective.

And occasionally, they come with coffee, chocolate, and a wonderful bookstore.
